Four people were injured in the accident as two drivers were treated for superficial injuries whilst another two members of the public were transported to a local hospital for more serious medical treatment and assistance. Rice has subsequently been charged with eight felonies, which also puts him in jeopardy of the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy and the League said that it is already monitoring the situation concerning the 23-year-old wide receiver.
The 2023 rookie faces charges of six of collision involving bodily injury, one of collision involving serious bodily injury and one of aggravated assault whilst further charges are possibly on the way such as leaving the scene of an accident involving injury.
The NFL will wait until the criminal matter is concluded, as is their standard practise, before they make a decision on whether to suspend or ban the receiver in what could be a big blow to the Chiefs ahead of the 2024 season. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have already said that they could be waiting for the facts and will respond appropriately, meaning they do not intend to blindly support Rice according to their president, Mark Donovan.
“In all these situations you have to wait until you have all the facts and frankly, we don’t have all the facts at this point,” Donovan said to KCMO. “We’ll get to the bottom of it, we’ll gather the facts and we’ll react accordingly. Rice has attempted to limit the damage via his attorney and his own words as he tried to claim responsibility for the incident, which had both cars linked to his name at one stage.
Initially his attorney broke the silence to stress Rice was co-operating and that he was feeling regretful about the crash near the city he used to play college football in. “On behalf of Rashee Rice, his thoughts are with everyone impacted by the automobile accident on Saturday,” Royce West, his attorney, told ESPN on April 1. “Rashee is co-operating with local authorities and will take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.”
Then Rice himself spoke out by apologizing on his own social media. It was reported that nobody stopped to check if anyone involved in the crash was okay according to Kayla Quinn, one the affected people. “I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to co-operate with the necessary authorities,” Rice posted on April 3. “I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident.”
