The Duke of Sussex’s fans were surprised at how harsh the nickname was when it was divulged last year. Now he has revealed just how he got it. In a newly-resurfaced excerpt from the book, Prince Harry discussed his relationship with his father King Charles.
He revealed it was his dad who actually gave him the nickname – in reaction to Princess Diana giving birth to a second boy. Harry said his dad’s words were: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.”
The Guardian newspaper noted that Prince Harry has always resentful of his nickname, and aired his frustration in his memoir. The newspaper said: “Harry’s resentment of being the ‘spare’ is the underlying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British Army, his relationship with his parents and brother, and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage, to their own experience of parenthood. ”
Meanwhile Prince Harry’s first port of call when he returns to England in May will reportedly be to see his father King Charles, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
