Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s “steely determination” to make money has been compared to American socialite Wallis Simpson and her husband King Edward, by a royal author.
Speaking to GB News, Alexander Larman compared the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, claiming they are a “modern day version” of the controversial royal couple.
The royal couple caused controversy in 1936 when Edward VIII abdicated the throne to his brother George, in order to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson. Larman told Camilla Tominey that Prince Harry has the same “haplessness” as the Duke of Windsor, with Meghan’s “steely determination” seen in the Duchess. Larman admitted: “I think they are very, very lucky to find each other because they’ve made two people miserable rather than four.
“Much of the same thing can be said about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.” Camilla highlighted the biggest “bombshell” for Prince Harry and Meghan, which was their decision to step down as senior royals in order to seek a more “private” life in America. Camilla asked Larman just how “damaging” he felt their exit has been for the Royal Family, but he claimed the exit was “not been damaging” for the couple
Larman explained: “I don’t think it’s been damaging at all, actually, because I think with Harry and Meghan, initially they were all for the controversy and the difficulty.”
He told GB News: “Ever since Harry published his memoir, Spare, which was a ridiculous book, there’s no sense whatsoever that they are a serious couple. “I was looking at the American Riviera Orchard revelation the other day and I thought Wallis Simpson, who was obviously Meghan’s spiritual forebear, would have done her own lifestyle brand – but with quite so crass a title? I don’t think so.” When asked by Camilla if he believes Harry and Meghan are a “latter-day Edward and Wallis”, Larman claimed: “I think they definitely are.”
Larman also reflected on the latest Royal Family crisis, as King Charles and Princess Kate continue their treatments for cancer. Larman stated that two senior royals facing significant health concerns is something that “certainly haven’t seen a situation like this in history”, and is “absolutely unprecedented”. The royal author said of the situation: “You can look what happened with Kate where the whole truth wasn’t being revealed, and the speculation got so wild.
“People were coming forward with the most outrageous ideas, and they were being taken seriously in mainstream circles. We are obsessed by the health of the Royal Family, because they are the first family in this country, and we look to them to set an example.”
