Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer has responded after controversial comments made by party representatives about the monarchy came to light.
Speaking to LancsLive during a visit to Blackpool, the Leader of the Labor Party addressed historical social media posts published by two election hopefuls. Clare Pritchard, Labor’s candidate for the Peel ward on Hyndburn Borough Council, called Queen Camilla a “jumped up old whore”.
Jane Orton, candidate for Lees city centre, called for an end to the monarchy on the day Queen Elizabeth II died, reports the Daily Express. Both women are candidates in the upcoming May 2 elections, and have since apologized for their comments. An internal investigation is believed to be underway.
When questioned on potential consequences for the candidates yesterday (April 11), Sir Keir told LancsLive: “As you know, we take all these things very seriously in the Labor Party and there are processes around that.”
Ms Pritchard made the comments about Queen Camilla on May 6, 2023. She shared a photo of Diana and said, “Forever Queen of the peoples hearts”, and “A true Queen NOT some jumped up old whore.”
On the day previous, she shared a photo of King Charles calling him “adulterous” and accusing him of “abandoning his son, wife and grandchildren.” The election hopeful also criticized the King for “paying no inheritance tax” and having a £250m Coronation, paid for by the taxpayers “whilst children go hungry.”
