Election LIVE updates: Keir Starmer’s flop with younger voters revealed in new poll: Follow our live blog for the latest updates on the 2024 General Election.
Sir Keir Starmer won just two-fifths of voters aged 18-24, according to new research by Lord Ashcroft. In new findings, the peer discovered that just 40% of the youngest voters back Labor, compared to 15% supporting the Greens and 14% for the Tories.
Labor’s greatest support came among 25-34-year-olds, however even with this cohort Labor failed to take 50%. By contrast, the Tories managed to maintain their lead among the over-65s, as Rishi Sunak’s warnings about Labor’s pension tax hit home.
In the end 52% of the Conservative’s 2019 vote stuck with the party, with Reform in a poor second hoovering up fewer than one in four ex-Tory voters. Lord Ashcroft also revealed 22% of voters only made their mind up on polling day, or the day they filled in their postal vote. Among these late deciders, they split evenly between Labor and the Tories who won 25% each.
