Chiefs land in Denver after hours-long winter storm delay in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Chiefs landed safely in Denver hours later than expected.
Video provided by Denver International Airport shows the United plane chartered by the Chiefs taxiing down a runway.
The team was scheduled to fly to Denver for Sunday’s final regular season game against the Broncos. KCTV 5 confirmed the team’s chartered flight did not leave as planned because KCI Airport closed due to icy conditions.
KCI Airport announced at 2:50 p.m. that it closed because of ice accumulation. At 5 p.m. the KCTV First Warn 5 Weather Team said there was a trace of ice on the ground at the airport.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Chiefs spent more than 4 hours sitting on the plane waiting to leave the metro. Kansas City Manager Brian Platt said KCI Airport would reopen around 5 p.m.
“We’re working to reopen the airfield as quickly, and as safely, as possible,” Justin Meyer, KC Aviation Deputy Director, said.
According to FlightAware, the Chiefs place finally took off from Kansas City shortly before 6 p.m.
The Chiefs are scheduled to kickoff against the Broncos tomorrow at 3:25 p.m. That game is scheduled to air on KCTV.
