Breaking:Patrick Mahomes’ Dad is Sober Now! – After The Quarterback’s dad faces DWI Charge, and he might face another…. See More
The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II is celebrating sixth months of sobriety.
Retired Major League relief pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. made the revelation on Instagram less than a month after he was arrested in Texas for driving on a suspended license.
He is currently awaiting trial on a drunk-driving charge stemming from his arrest in the same Texas county on February 3.
‘I would like to Thank my God wife family and friends for 6 months on the sunny side of the road,’ the elder Mahomes wrote on Instagram. ‘I know it’s been hard getting to know sober Pat but it’s well worth it.’
The 53-year-old’s caption also included a message for his wife, Patrick II’s stepmother: ‘Trisha Mahomes thanks for all you do.’
Somewhat confusingly, the Instagram post featured a picture of Mahomes Sr. with his head cropped out of frame. Even more baffling is the presence of baseball’s all-time hit king, Pete Rose, in the photo.
The shot appears to come from a celebrity golf tournament that both Mahomes Sr. and the Cincinnati Reds legend attended back in June.
Mahomes Sr’s drunk-driving trial is set to begin in Smith County, Texas on August 12.
He was officially indicted on DWI charges on March 28, according to online court records. The charge is listed as ‘Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More.’
Mahomes Sr. faces a potential 10-year sentence and up to a $10,000 fine.
He was arrested by Tyler (Texas) police on February 3, marking at least the third time he was picked up on a drunk-driving related charge.
He was previously sentenced to 40 days in jail in 2019 after one of his DUI offenses.
The younger Mahomes declined to discuss the arrest with reporters in Las Vegas in the days leading up to his second consecutive Super Bowl victory.
‘It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family,’ Mahomes told reporters on Super Bowl opening night. ‘That’s all I have to say.’
Since being charged, the elder Mahomes was arrested for driving on a suspended license last month in Smith County. The 53-year-old was also given a warning for ignoring traffic signs, suggesting he may have been pulled over for a moving violation.
A divorced father of four, Mahomes Sr. posted a 5.34 ERA over 11 MLB seasons, during which time he was primarily used as a reliever.
Mahomes II inherited his father’s passion for baseball. Not only was he a high school star in Texas, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP is also a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals.
Furthermore, Mahomes Sr.’s former Minnesota Twins teammate, retired reliever LaTroy Hawkins, is Mahomes II’s godfather.
