“Why are you doing that?” Joy Behar asked. Goldberg later returned from a brief clip break with large purple sunglasses on.
The Whoopi Goldberg War Room temporarily lost visuals on its intended target Tuesday morning, before its Commander-in-Chief called in an emergency change-of-action on a live episode of The View.
As the talk show returned from a commercial break, Goldberg held blue note cards over her head as she looked into the camera and attempted to read the segue written for her on the prompter.
“Welcome back. While the Harris campaign focuses on the issues at stake,” the 68-year-old said. Sensing her struggle, the audience lightly chuckled before cohost Joy Behar piped up.
“Why are yo doing that?” Behar asked. “Because I can’t see! The light is killing me,” Goldberg responded.
Sara Haines called Goldberg’s impromptu headpiece her “homemade sun visor,” before Goldberg passed off reading duties to her.
“I know, I know” Goldberg said to audience. “Somebody [else] should read it.”
The show then played a clip of Donald Trump talking about Arnold Palmer’s genitals as well as the golf legend’s daughter responding to the odd quote. When the camera returned to the Hot Topics table, Goldberg was wearing a pair of large purple sunglasses โ which she kept on for the rest of the show, including for her interview with Woman of the Hour director-star Anna Kendrick.
As the studio audience cheered Goldberg’s eyewear, she paused before continuing: “But, enough about me,” she said with a smile.
Goldberg revealed on The View in March 2023 that she no longer needed her iconic glasses to moderate the show, after she got eye surgery to address presbyopia, a refractive ailment of the eye.
“Two weeks ago, when we had a show with the folks of Picard, I was trying to read the prompter without my actual glasses, and I couldn’t do it, so I ended up having to use [my glasses],” she continued, telling viewers why she ended up going through with the procedure.
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
