Fans of New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne are expressing disappointment in the wake of Kendrick Lamar being announced as the headliner for the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. The show is scheduled to happen at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 9, 2025.

Fans are furious at NFL boards for choosing Kendrick Lamar ahead of Lil Wayne to represent the culture at the coming Super Bowl finals…

While fans of the Compton star rejoiced at the announcement, many pointed out that choosing him over the Lights Out rapper, who was born and raised in New Orleans, was an unpopular move. For instance, X user @teeemackkk_ shared a post that overlooking Weezy to represent his hometown wasn’t the right move.
“Lil Wayne def should’ve been picked to perform at the Super Bowl. He’s literally from New Orleans and a rap legend,” the user wrote.

Several others joined the conversation and shared similar reactions.
“Lil Wayne is the only one worthy of performing at the New Orleans Superbowl f*ck y’all talking about,” a person wrote.

“How did we fumble Lil Wayne performing at the Super Bowl in his hometown,” one person wrote.
“Nah y’all did Lil Wayne so wrong. Kendrick’s ‘hype’ over a beef & clout chasing off Drake lands him to headline a Super Bowl over the goat Lil Wayne in his own city… smh this is disappointing ngl,” wrote another.

Others continued to echo similar sentiments. They claimed that while Kendrick Lamar was a hip-hop icon, picking him over Weezy in the latter’s hometown was unprecedented.
“Listen… I’m not hating on K-Dot hosting the Super Bowl Halftime show… he’s definitely a big enough artist with enough hits to deserve it. But NOBODY should be headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans over Lil Wayne… NO F*CKING BODY,” a fan wrote.

“Selecting Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne to perform in the Super Bowl when it’s stationed in New Orleans this year is what’s wrong with the world today… Sh*t just not right smh,” another fan wrote.
Meanwhile, some people mentioned how the Not Like Us rapper was more popular in recent times than Weezy, making him the right choice from a business point of view.

“Lil Wayne is a legend, all hip-hop fans know this. But Kendrick has far more pull than him right now. He’s one of the biggest artists in the world and has had a huge year without even dropping an album. You don’t automatically get the Super Bowl because it’s in your city,” a netizen wrote.

“Super Bowl is about moments. Yes, it would’ve been a great idea but the business is the business. Ratings will be outstanding and advertisers will make hundreds of millions,” wrote another.

Lil Wayne associates also expressed disappointment at his Super Bowl exclusion
After Kendrick Lamar was announced as the headliner for the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans, Weezy’s longtime friend, manager, and engineer Fabian Marasciullo took to his Instagram Story and shared how “confused,” “disappointed,” and “angry” he was, but “most of all, inspired.”

“Will never again be in a position or have the GOAT [Lil Wayne] in a position where we are at the mercy of someone else’s decision. We will make the decisions,” Fabian wrote.

His remarks came in the wake of NFL music strategist and Roc Nation (programmer for the show) mogul Jay-Z hailing Kendrick Lamar’s selection via a public statement. In his statement, he hailed K-Dot as a “truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer.”
“His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come,” Jay-Z noted.

Meanwhile, rapper, record executive, and music producer Master P congratulated K-Dot for landing the “well-deserved” gig and called him “one of the hottest music artists in the world.” However, he added that as the Ambassador of Entertainment in the City of New Orleans, he had to “agree” with Weezy fans that he too should be “part of this celebration.”

The TRU member even hailed the Young Money Entertainment founder as “one of the greatest hip-hop artists alive,” who he claimed was not only “relevant” but also a NO native.
“Let’s not miss this cultural moment in the South. Life is too short! We have to give our legends their flowers while they are here,” Master P shared.
As for Kendrick Lamar, he made social media posts celebrating his Super Bowl Halftime headlining announcement with a rare video post and asked fans to join him on the big day. Previously, K-Dot was a special guest performer at the sporting event in 2022.
