Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team accused the United States of “government misconduct” in regards to their ongoing sex trafficking case against the rapper in order to rile up the public.
According to court documents obtained by The Mirror, the defense team claimed a series of alleged illegal government leaks have led to damaging pre-trial publicity, potentially tainting the jury pool and jeopardizing Combs’ right to a fair trial. The documents claims: “Government employees have repeatedly leaked grand jury information and materials to the press to raise public hostility against Mr. Combs in advance of trial.
They cited a notorious case where video footage surfaced of Diddy beating his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a hotel hallway. While Diddy continues to deny all wrongdoing against him, he did take “responsibility” for his actions in that particular video through a video statement.
The defense attorneys suggested that the government released the video on “a slow news day” when Donald Trump’s trial wasn’t in session due to his youngest son, Barron Trump’s high school graduation. Combs’ defense also emphasized their belief that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were responsible for the leaks.
Despite Cassie and Combs reaching an out-of-court settlement for the lawsuit, Combs continues to face multiple allegations from different individuals. He faced a myriad of civil lawsuits alleging, among other things, rape. As the accusations against Diddy continued to grow, Homeland Security conducted a raid on his Miami and Los Angeles homes.
At the time of the raids, Diddy’s attorney, Aaron Dyer, also claimed the government was intentionally drudging up media attention. In the statement to The Mirror, he said: “This unprecedented ambush — paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence — leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits. There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations. Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”
In the recent court filing, his legal team echoed the prior sentiment, claiming “the agents engaged in a particularly brutal and public search of Mr. Combs’ homes, during which they handcuffed Mr.Combs’ innocent sons and then marched them before a news helicopter and the press.”
The documents further point fingers toward “a steady stream of false and prejudicial statements madeby DHS agents to various press outlets over the last seven months.” Combs’ lawyers have requested an evidentiary hearing in the court documents, urging the judge to address the alleged leaked information.
