Eight years ago, Patrick Mahomes and his family led a completely different life. The 3x Super Bowl winner was in college, and his mother, Randi Mahomes, worked two jobs to keep the family afloat. But their fortunes turned when Patrick was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2017 Draft and Randi, has since longed for a return to a normal life and reminisced about the time when his Super Bowl-winning son would rely on her.

Patrick Mahomes initially signed a four-year rookie contract with the Kansas City Chiefs worth $16.4 million in July 2017. The QB rose to fame with his success on the gridiron and has become a high-profile star with the spotlight firmly on him and his family. While this brought challenges of its own in the public domain, for Randi Mahomes it has a more personal after-effect.

“It’s a new life, almost a new way of living. It’s a little different than the way we were living eight years ago and he would call me for money. I kind of enjoyed it whenever they actually needed me for money because my boys needed me for something,” Randi Mahomes disclosed on The Mom Game Podcast on June 21.

And so, I’m like ‘Okay, they don’t even need me for money like to take them to dinner.’ They take me to dinner and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute,’” she added. With the money in pouring for Patrick as part of the successful Chiefs side it is understandable that the QB has become independent, but for Randi getting suddenly detached from her motherly duties wasn’t easy.

She also mentioned that the change wasn’t easy for her son as well. “That was hard for a long time for Patrick to have him buy my meal. I’m like, he’s my son. I buy his meal. That was a weird, hard thing for me as a mom who did it all.” Randi started working two jobs post her divorce from Patrick Mahomes Sr. in 2006 for almost 10 years. She did shifts at the Hollytree Country Club in Tyler, starting as a receptionist before working her way up to an events planner.

The times have changed for the better with Mahomes pulling off the heavy-duty stuff. The life she was used to flipped upside down when she soon took the league by storm. Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year $450 million contract extension with the Chiefs in 2020, the richest deal in the NFL in terms of total money. This paved the way for considerable fame and wealth to pour into the lives of the Mahomes family.

But again, this fame has meant it has become difficult for the Mahomes family to stay low and escape the public eye. Apart from Patrick’s popularity as an NFL superstar, his brother Jackson is a social media influencer. This

“I look at some of my friends on social media and I’m jealous that they have this normal. Their kids are the same age as Patrick (28) and Jackson (24), and they have this normal situation and we don’t. It’s super difficult. We just want to be normal and go and have dinner,” Randi Mahomes mentioned.

I’m a little selfish sometimes. I want them to myself. I want to be able to talk to them and not have anyone around and just be our family,” the Super Bowl winner’s mother expressed.

Patrick’s rise to superstardom has also brought greater scrutiny to the family, something Randi hasn’t liked. “As much as I say we’re blessed and Patrick’s living his dream, it has been the hardest seven years of my adult life.” We recently saw how Patrick’s wife Brittany Mahomes had to face severe backlash for ‘liking’ one of Donald Trump’s Instagram posts about his campaign promises.

Throughout The Mom Game podcast, one thing was apparent: Randi Mahomes yearns for her son to spend time with her or ask for a favor. Luckily, she got her opportunity a couple of months ago.
