Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to 3-0 but gave a brutal assessment of their offensive performances.
The Chiefs’ defense shut down the Atlanta Falcons on a go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter on Sunday Night Football to secure a win.
Missing star running back Isiah Pacheco, Mahomes threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns in the 22-17 triumph and admits he is not happy despite a perfect record.
“We haven’t played well in all three games,” he said, with the Chiefs only managing a +13 point differential so far this season.
“We’ve been able to win, that speaks to the character of the team -the grit, how we’ve been in these situations before.
“But I’ll speak offensively and, for me, I haven’t played very well.
“And that’s not a stats thing, I just think I’m missing opportunities whenever they are out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at.
“It’s about me getting back to my fundamentals, putting our guys in the right position. We gotta execute at a higher level offensively and make teams drop the field.
“We have to prove that we’re able to do that and I’m sure it’ll be a lot of the same next week against the Chargers.”
While Mahomes credited the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions’ ability to come up clutch, fans thought they had a helping hand.
On their penultimate drive, Kirk Cousins threw to Kyle Pitts in the end zone for a touchdown that would have put Atlanta up.
Safety Brian Cook smothered the tight end and broke up the play, forcing a fourth down the Falcons were unable to convert.
The officials did not call defensive pass interference, and NFL insider Albert Breer referenced the dominant New England Patriots of old and NBA great Michael Jordan in his response.
“The Chiefs have mirrored the old Patriots in a lot of ways, and I guess getting the Michael Jordan treatment from the refs is another one,” he posted on X.
“We all know the league will do anything just for Mahomes to win,” replied one fan.
“And what happened last week? Chiefs got that exact call. They aren’t even hiding it anymore,” added another.
“If that’s Kelce, three flags are flying in,” a third suggested.
There were plenty of dissenting voices on social media – pointing out that the Falcons got several first downs thanks to the officials on their next drive.
“I think every Chiefs fan out there would agree with you that that was passing interference on Cook in the end zone and it should’ve been called.
“Not sure why they didn’t call it. Now the refs are throwing make up flags all over the field against the Chiefs,” commented one.
