Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce has officially put an end to retirement rumors, confirming his return for the 2025 NFL season. Following the Chiefs’ heartbreaking Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelce took time to reflect on his future and explore opportunities beyond football. While many assumed his decision would be influenced by close friends like Patrick Mahomes or even Taylor Swift, it was actually his teammate Rashee Rice who played a pivotal role in convincing him to stay.
Rashee Rice’s Impact on Kelce’s Decision
At 35, Kelce remains one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. However, after enduring another physically demanding season, discussions about his potential retirement gained traction. Following the Chiefs’ loss on February 9, 2025, he sought guidance from head coach Andy Reid, who acknowledged that Kelce had plenty of opportunities outside of football.
He’s gonna make a killing there,” Reid remarked, alluding to Kelce’s potential success in media and entertainment once he decides to step away from the game. Despite Reid’s comments, it was Rice’s heartfelt plea that ultimately swayed Kelce’s decision to continue playing.
Rice’s Emotional Appeal to Kelce
In a candid interview with Revolt, Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice shared how determined he was to keep Kelce from retiring.
“I ain’t gonna lie to y’all. I’m 95 percent of the reason he ain’t retiring. I ain’t gonna lie to y’all,” Rice said.
Rice revealed that he was unwilling to let Kelce walk away after a Super Bowl defeat. “Told him he can’t go out like that. I’m gonna make sure we get that next year. He was fine hanging it up. I’m pretty sure he was gonna hang it up. And I’m like, bro, we can’t go out like that,” he explained.
A Promise to Chase Another Championship
Determined to bring Kelce back for another season, Rice took a direct approach. He messaged Kelce personally, making a bold commitment to help the team reclaim the championship.
