Sting insists allegations against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs don’t impact his classic.
Sting has confirmed that the recent allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs do not change his view of his iconic song “Every Breath You Take,” which Diddy sampled in his 1997 track “I’ll Be Missing You.”
In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, the 73-year-old musician addressed whether Diddy’s legal troubles had influenced his feelings toward the track, to which he responded, “No.” Sting emphasized that despite the charges facing Diddy, which include sex trafficking and racketeering, he does not see this affecting the integrity of his original song.
Diddy was arrested in September following a federal investigation, and he now remains in custody at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. Sting noted that he remains open to having his work sampled, saying, “Songs are living organisms,” and he appreciates when younger musicians bring new life to his music. Although the allegations against Diddy have impacted his public image, streams of his music reportedly spiked following his arrest, a trend observed with other artists facing similar charges.
